Autism is a complex, bio-neurological disorder that generally appears before the age of three. It impacts the typical development of the brain in the areas of communication, cognitive funtion, behavior, and social interaction.
At this time, autism is not curable but it is treatable. Today, in the United States, 1 in 110 children born will be affected by autism. It is four times more common among boys than girls and is found among all racial and economic groups. Autism is referred to as a “spectrum" disorder, because the symptoms and behaviors can present themselves in a variety of combinations, from mild to severe.
The therapeutic teaching techniques of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) have been found in studies to be most successful for individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some of the instructional skill areas presented by Eden's teachers and therapists for children, adolescents and adults include: Social language, communication, academics, fine and gross motor skills, classroom readiness, play and social skills, self-care, daily living, vocational and employment training, and recreation and leisure skills.
